If you are looking to upgrade the chairs in your office you will be amazed to find the amount that is available on the market today. Prices for swivel chairs range from being very affordable and cost effective to being absolutely extortionately priced. Before embarking on replacing the chairs in your office or even your home office I would suggest that you set your budget, be careful though, buying a really cheap office chair that you are going to spend many hours in can be a false economy. To avoid wasting money there are three essential features that your new office/swivel chair should have:
Height Adjustment - Being able to adjust the height of your chair is essential to you and your employees well being. How you adjust it is not so critical, it's easier if it's pneumatic adjustment, but if your budget will only allow a mechanical adjustment then this is better than no height adjustment. Setting up the height of the chair is a balance between allowing your feet to be flat on the floor and keep you elbow at the right height so that when your hands are on the desk your forearms are parallel. Seat Back Angle - Your mother probably always told you to 'sit up straight' but this isn't entirely true. To remove pressure off your lower back you should be able to lean slightly back in your chair. Having an angle of approximately 110o between you legs and torso is about the right angle to sit at. Having a chair that has the ability to adjust the angle that you sit is going to be able to offer you a far superior seating position. At a certain price points you may not be able to find a chair that has an adjustable back, but instead the whole seat (seat and backrest) tilts backwards. Although this type of adjustability will not increase the angle between your legs and torso it will allow you to lean backwards which will therefore relieve the pressure on your lower back. Free running casters - Having a swivel chair that has got poor quality caster (wheels) is not only annoying, but also extremely dangerous. Trying to wheel backwards on a chair, and a caster jamming will result in you or your employees' chair possibly tipping backwards causing potential injury to themselves and/or co-workers. In this litigious society can you afford to take this risk? It's difficult to tell how good a caster is, but as a general rule the larger a caster is the less likely it is to jam up, or be stopped by obstacle on the floor such as wires and bag straps.

Purchasing a new chair or chairs that satisfy all three of these criteria - height and seat back angle adjustment and means that you will have happier employees and you will have reduced the risk of a work place injury.
