Consumer Reports: High Chairs

You'll want a stable, sturdy model that can stand up to spilling, kicking, and regular cleaning for at least a year (some babies can't bear to sit in a high chair after that). A chair with a tray that can be released with one hand is also a plus. Picture your baby occupying your other arm while you're opening and closing the tray; it's just one of the many physical feats you'll be asked to master as a parent.

Adjustable Height Casters

A high chair usually consists of a frame of molded plastic or metal tubing and an attached seat with a safety belt and a footrest. There are still a few old-fashioned wooden high chairs out there with a removable tray or arms that lift the tray over a baby's head, although they aren't always as comfortable for babies as the modern, form-fitting models on the market now, and most of them aren't certified as meeting the latest safety standards. You'll also find a few hybrid units, which can double as a swing or convert into other types of gear, such as a chair for an older child or a play table.

SHOPPING SECRETS

Look for a chair that has a waist strap and a strap that runs between the legs. If a tray is used, there should be a passive restraint, such as a crotch post, used in conjunction with the harness straps. A high chair, like a car seat or a stroller, is one of those shake-rattle-and-roll buying experiences. We suggest visiting the baby store near you with the broadest selection. Then do the following:

Open and close the fastener on the seat's safety harness (try it one-handed) to make sure it's easy to use. If it's not, you might be tempted not to use it every time your child is in the seat, although that's imperative.

Adjust the seat height to see how well that mechanism works. Some seats come with as many as seven possible heights. You may only use one or two, but you can't know for sure at this point.

Assess the seat cover. Look for a chair with upholstery made to last. It should feel substantial, not flimsy. Make sure upholstery seams won't scratch your baby's legs.

Make sure wheels can be locked (if you're buying a model with wheels) or that they become immobilized when there is weight (like a baby) in the seat.

Watch out for rough edges. Examine the underside of the feeding tray to make sure it's free of anything sharp that could scratch your baby. Also look for small holes or hinges that could capture little fingers.

Check for the absence of small parts. Make sure the caps or plugs that cover the ends of metal tubing are well secured. Parts small enough for a child to swallow or inhale are a choking hazard. Know when to fold 'em. If you plan to fold up your high chair as often as every day, practice in the store. Some chairs that claim to be foldable can have stiff folding mechanisms. Technically they may be foldable, but they're not user-friendly.

WHAT'S AVAILABLE

Major brands of high chairs include, in alphabetical order: Baby Trend, Chicco USA, Dorel Juvenile Group (Cosco), Evenflo, Fisher-Price, Graco, J. Mason, Kolcraft, Peg Perego, and Scandinavian Child. There are three general price ranges:

Basic high chairs

High chairs at this end of the price range (under ) are simple, compact, and generally work quite well. Essentially plastic seats on plastic or steel-tubing legs, such models may or may not have tray and height adjustments and tend to lack bells and whistles, such as wheels, foldability for storage, one-handed tray removal, or the capacity to recline, which you may not use anyway unless you're bottle-feeding. The seat is usually upholstered with a vinyl covering or bare plastic, and the pad may be removable and washable. The tray is typically kept in place with pins that fit into holes in the tubing.

Pros: For the money, a basic high chair can serve you and your baby well. But it pays to comparison shop, as some brands may be more suitable to your needs than others.

Cons: Watch for chairs in this price range with grooves in the seat's molded plastic (a gunk trap); cotton seat pads rather than vinyl, which tend not to hold up as well over time; and trays with side release buttons that are accessible to your baby. Some parents report that their babies can remove such trays--food and all--as early as 9 months of age.

Midpriced high chairs

In this price range ( to 0), you'll find many of the features of higher-end chairs, which include multiple tray and chair-height positions; casters for mobility, with a locking feature for safe parking; a reclining seat for infant feeding; one-hand removable tray; foldability for storage; and a three- or five-point harness plus a passive restraint when used with the tray. Most have cushioned, vinyl seat pads that can be removed for washing, although you'll also still see models with cloth covers in this price range; those are a challenge to keep clean. Frames and seats are typically made of molded, rigid plastic or steel.

Pros: This price range generally offers sturdier chairs with more usable features, although, depending on the model, price isn't always aligned with quality.

Cons: Some models are bulky and can eat up space in a small kitchen, although a large footprint provides greater stability. Just watch out that you don't trip on the protruding legs.

High-end high chairs

In this price range (0 and up), you'll find European imports and traditional solid-wood high chairs. Chairs at this end of the market tend to have thick, tubular frames topped by densely padded seats upholstered in vinyl. As a result, they may have a more solid feel and cushier digs for baby. Some models come with add-on fabric covers that are removable for laundering. These chairs can be adjusted to many different heights and reclining positions with a simple squeeze-release mechanism. Some have folding "A"-shaped frames to make them easy to store.

Pros: You'll get extra features, such as seven height positions instead of five, and often better quality, which is important to consider if you want the chair to last through another baby or more. Another bonus: Many parents report that companies that sell higher-end chairs tend to have responsive customer service, which helps if you have a problem.

Cons: Chairs in this range can be bulky because they tend to have a wider base for stability. That's good because it reduces the risk of tipping. However, you'll need more space to accommodate the footprint, which tends to be more like that of a baby swing.

FEATURES TO CONSIDER

Crotch post. To help prevent a baby from slipping out under the tray and getting his or her head caught, high chairs now typically have a center crotch post attached to the tray or to the seat. It's not meant to replace the safety belt, though. A center post that attaches to the chair rather than to the tray is better because it enables you to push your child up to the table without the tray but still have that center-post support.

Foldability. Some high chairs fold for storage. If that's important to you, make sure there's a secure locking system to prevent accidental folding while your child is in the chair or being put into it. Such a system should automatically engage when you open the chair.

Safety belt. As we mentioned, this is an important feature. When buying a high chair, examine the restraining straps to make sure the waist belt has a buckle that can't be fastened unless the crotch strap is also used. Safety belts should hold your baby securely in place, with no leeway for standing up or climbing out. Some high chairs offer an adjustable three-point harness--two adjustable shoulder straps and a lock between the child's legs--or an adjustable five-point harness--two straps over the shoulders, two for the thighs, and a crotch strap, which is ideal.

Seat adjustment. Seats can move up or down to as many as seven height positions on some chairs. They may also recline (in case your baby falls asleep right after eating). However, except for bottle feeding, don't use a seat in the reclining position while feeding your baby--that's a choking hazard. With a height-adjusting chair, the seat slides along the chair frame, locking into various positions. Height options range from nearly floor level to standard high-chair level, with the middle height low enough to allow the seat (with the tray removed) to be pushed up to a dining-room table.

Toys. Some high chairs have toys that attach to the tray, an option your baby will likely enjoy, although you can certainly buy toys separately that fasten to high-chair trays. But avoid strings when attaching them.

Tray. In general, you'll want a lightweight tray you can take off with one hand or that swings to the side when not in use. Certain designs help contain spills: a tray that surrounds baby on all sides, a tray angle that channels liquids away from baby, or a tall rim all around the tray. Some chairs have two trays: a big tray with a deep rim for feeding and a smaller one for snacking or playing. Don't be lured by a claim that the tray is "dishwasher safe"--most trays are too large to fit in a dishwasher.

Upholstery. Many models have seat coverings--or entire seat panels--that come off for easier cleaning. Be sure fasteners won't cause upholstery to tear as you pull off the seat or coverings. Opt for a seat cover with a pattern rather than a solid color; patterns are better at concealing spills. Some covers look like cloth but are really vinyl, which is easier to spot clean than cloth.

Wheels. Wheels may make it easier to move the high chair around, which is important if you'll frequently be hauling your high chair from, say, the kitchen to the dining room. On the other hand, wheels can also be a nuisance because they may allow the chair to move as you're trying to pull a tray off, or as you put your baby in. Older children may be tempted to take the baby for a joyride when you turn your back. Wheels on some models appear to make the chair less stable. If you decide on a wheeled model, look for locks on the wheels, preferably on all four. Some models come with locking casters. Still others have just two wheels and stay in place unless you tilt them on their wheels for rolling around.

RECOMMENDATIONS

There are pluses and minuses with every price range of chair. All can be tough to clean because, let's face it, baby food has a way of getting into every possible nook and cranny (and most seats have them somewhere). High-end models offer flexible positioning, extra-thick seat padding, and attractive upholstery.

Mid priced models generally represent the best value. And, like high-end models, they usually have an easy-to-remove tray, a sturdy safety belt, a tip-resistant frame, and a crotch post. But even some basic chairs can compete with higher-end models in terms of safety and other features. No matter what your budget, buy a chair of recent production that's certified so you can be sure it meets the current voluntary safety standard.

Big and Tall Office Chairs - What You Should Know Before Buying

Before you purchase a Big and Tall Office Chair here are some a few things I learned when looking for a new office chair. You have to pay attention to the weight capacity. Normally I do that anyway, before I plop myself into a chair. After a few times of hearing a chair shriek under my weight, I got to be hyper sensitive to any suspicious noises from the chair. Big and tall chairs are actually rated up 400 lbs., with some going up to 500 lbs. That fact alone, reassures my mind when sitting in the chair, when I'm titling back.

Adjustable Height Casters

Big and tall guys and gals, are well... bigger. We need bigger seats for ..um.. our posteriors. Big and tall chairs have different seat proportions than regular seats. No sense jamming yourself into a regular chair, when you can sit comfortably into a larger one. Compare the seat dimensions when shopping. The seat should be both wider and deeper. Adjustability: This factor alone is one of the most important features when buying a chair. Any chair for that matter. Big and tall office chairs should be able to adjust your armrests, height and back for the greatest amount of comfort.

Adjustable Height Casters

According to the chiropractic profession, sitting actually compresses your spine more than standing or lying down. Without a chair that adjusts, your chances of back pain increase substantially. MensHealth puts out a figure that the average worker sits on his rear about 74% of the day! Bigger people compress the padding of a chair more. If its thin to begin with, imagine your behind after a few hours on a regular chair. I know sometimes I feel like I am sitting on a block of concrete when sitting on a ordinary chair I've had for awhile. Once again, big and tall chairs have thicker padding than ordinary office chairs.

Check out the specs when purchasing. The seat material also is a factor in the comfort when buying a chair. Now a days, mesh materials are very popular. They allow airflow to the seat, reducing temperature and discomfort. ( Not to mention gas......) Some fabrics can reduce heat up to 66%.

Another feature that a comfortable big and tall chair should have is a lumbar support. This support should be fully adjustable with height and depth control. When you lean back into the chair your spine should feel supported. You should also feel confidence you won't crack the back of the chair. (Ever hear some weird noises when leaning back on a regular chair?).

Finally, casters make a big, big difference. Heavy duty casters are on big and tall chairs. They really are great to roll around on, saving your back when you are scooting around.

Some are designed to be able to roll over carpet without using a floor mat.

Lowering Your Car - What You'll Need

Lowering your ride is a great way to improve style and flair. You'll also notice better fuel consumption, surprisingly. However, style and performance are the two main reasons to drop your car to the asphalt. Lowering your ride's center of gravity will help it handle better in tight turns and in general driving. However, you will need to know a few things before you lower that car. At all costs, avoid anyone that tells you to simply heat your springs so that they sag; that's a quick way to damage your ride and it will cost you the same or more, in the end.

Adjustable Height Casters

You will need several things prior to lowering your vehicle.

Adjustable Height Casters

Struts and Shocks: Dropping you ride down even a few inches puts great stress on your OEM struts and shocks; the best thing to do is to purchase performance suspension parts. You'll find two options available.

· You can purchase separate struts, shocks and springs. This is a budget option that can give you the ride height that you want, without breaking your wallet.

· Coilovers offer you more benefits, but will cost more. Skunk 2, Mugen, Megan Racing, D2, Tein and JIC are all popular companies offering quality coilovers.

Performance shocks and struts are specially designed to withstand the rigors of a lowered ride, while still providing a comfortable seat for driver and passengers. OEM shocks and struts will provide a harsh, jarring ride if used in a lowering project.

Coilovers offer you the best way to lower your ride. These innovative units combine struts and shocks, with lowering springs, as well as built in camber adjustment. If you already have performance struts and springs, as well as a camber kit, you can purchase coilover sleeves that will do the same job.

The largest benefit to using coilovers is that you can adjust your ride height at any time. Lowering springs provide a set ride position that cannot be changed. However, coilovers allow you to adjust your height to any level required. You can even change the ride height based on specific driving conditions. Coilovers are the best option for those unsure of the exact height they want, allowing them to experiment with different heights and choose the one with which they are most comfortable.

Camber Kits- Coilovers come with a built in camber adjustment. However, if you opt to use lowering springs only, you will need a camber kit for your car. Camber is one of the adjustments in your vehicles alignment and suspension; without proper camber and caster alignment, you'll find that you go through tires in nothing, flat. That can be very expensive, especially if you spent a good deal of money on performance tires. Having an adjustable camber kit installed will help you avoid this waste and trouble.

You can lower your car on your own; however, having it done at a shop is the best option. Putting your vehicle on a lift, rather than relying on jack stands is much safer, as well as faster.

What Are The Top Rated Ergonomic Office Chairs

In this world where just everyone seems to be in a constant state of tension and stress, it is important that we take care of ourselves where it matters. We can admit to ourselves that the reason why we are constantly stressed is likely to be the hectic schedules in our busy careers. True, true. But then, have you ever thought of how your office chair affects you?

Adjustable Height Casters

Today, if you look at the market for office chairs, you will see that most if not all of them are advertised to be designed in an ergonomically correct way. These kinds of work chairs are designed with the human body in mind, aiming to help improve its user's health conditions and correct the possible health problems he is suffering.

Adjustable Height Casters

Some of these common health problems include incorrect body posture and poor blood circulation. Sitting on ergonomic chairs can dramatically improve your health and even your work productivity. But not all ergonomic office chairs are the same. You need to choose one that will really fit you best. Difficult? Let me help you with this list of the top rated ergonomic work chairs in the market.

Office Star Deluxe Ergonomic Chair

For just below 0, you can already have a leather executive chair that is not only affordable and comfortable but ergonomically correct as well. Like a normal ergonomic office chair, this has an adjustable seat height and arm rest. You can also customize the chair according to how you would want it to recline by adjusting the tilt tension.

The Office Star Deluxe comes with a high back and a thick, wide cushion and many people say it is a surprisingly good chair for its surprisingly low price. It is well constructed and guarantees superior comfort to its users. The leather though is not high grade (hence the price) but people who have already tried it insists you can hardly feel the difference.

It lacks the other cool adjustments you can find in other much more expensive ergonomic work chairs but it is good enough with its basic but essential features. The Office Star Deluxe also offers a shorter warranty as compared to the more expensive ones. The warranty covers one year on the upholstery, two years on its moving parts and five years for the non-moving parts.

Ergo Mesh Medium Back Task Chair

Priced even lower than the previous ergonomic office chair discussed at just 0, the Ergo Mesh task chair is perfect for people with tight budgets but really want to own a good ergonomic work chair. This is recommended for newly built companies and offices that are just starting to grow. You can easily buy many pieces of these without getting bankrupt.

The Ergo Mesh task chair has a mesh back (hence the name) and an adjustable seat with molded foam/ It also has an adjustable seat height and armrests as well as swivel, tilt and tension functions. Users testified that the chair is really comfortable to use. However, it is a task chair, an entry level office chair so when you decide this is the one that fits your budget, you should not expect it to look like expensive executive work chairs.

So for those who are just starting to open their offices or those who are slowly expanding their businesses, this may be the best ergonomic office chair for you. You will be able to save money but the users of the chairs will be comfortable and productive.

Steelcase Leap

Contrary to the first two ergonomic work chairs discussed, the Steelcase Leap is priced a lot higher. Having a price of at least 0, this office chair belongs to the high end category. This ergonomic work chair has a sliding seat and a flexible back that are both upholstered. The flexible back conforms to the natural contour of the spine so you can recline easily without having to pull away from your desk.

More padding has been added to the Steelcase Leap. The fabric version weighs around 45 pounds while the leather version, priced at ,200 weighs around 60 pounds. A lifetime warranty is offered by Steelcase for this office chair, but the warranty for the fabric is just 3 years while the warranty for the seating mechanisms only lasts up to 10 years.

Herman Miller Aeron

You can consider the name Herman Miller as a giant in the ergonomic chair industry. This model, the Herman Miller Aeron costs at least 0 and has won the most number of awards among all the other office chairs in history. Some people contend that it no longer suits today's times but many people will still back up that the Aeron is the best chair. Ever.

It comes with more adjustments than the regular chair, such as adjustment for lumbar depth, lumbar height, seat height, seat-pan angle, tilt tension, armrest height and armrest angle. Rather than fabric, the Aeron is manufactured using Pellicle mesh and does not come in a standard size but in three sizes. People who are too small or too big prefer getting an Aeron because one size will surely fit them well.

The Aeron also has a warranty of 12 years. If you have the money for it, you will never go wrong with the Herman Miller Aeron which has been giving great service to people since 1994. The only negative aspect of this ergonomic office chair is that, well, it is expensive.

Black Friday HumanScale Freedom Gel Chair F213 with Headrest New GEL Seat Graphite Wave Fabric Advanced Height Adjustable Duron Arms Standard Chair Height Graphite Frame with Standard Casters Overview

HUMANSCALE FREEDOM GEL CHAIR + Advanced Adjustable Duron Arms - Winner of 10 design awards to date-including the Design Distinction Award in the prestigious ID Design Review 2000 competition-the Freedom chair by Niels Diffrient has revolutionized the task chair industry. Its weight-sensitive recline, synchronously adjustable armrests, and dynamically positioned headrest set new standards for task chair performance and functionality to keep the sitter exceptionally comfortable while also lowering the risk of long-term injury. The Freedom chair is designed to give the maximum ergonomic benefit to the sitter with a minimum number of manually adjusted controls. Once the chair is fitted, no further adjustment is required. The idea is that movement, which is essential for a healthy body, shouldn't be constricted by locking mechanisms and manual controls. In other words, sitting comfortably isn't something you should have to think about. The Freedom chair was designed specifically to encourage frequent, spontaneous changes of position. There are no locks and no tension springs to negotiate. Instead, there are elegant mechanisms that automatically support your body in every position you'll assume throughout the day. Headrests are added to chairs because your head needs support when you recline, which is why people without headrests put their hands behind their heads when they lean back. The dynamic, position sensitive headrest on Freedom cradles your head and neck as you recline and moves out of the way when you sit upright automatically! Made predominantly of aluminum, followed by steel and plastic. Contains 62% recycled content (43% post-consumer, 19% pre-consumer) 90% recyclable. Made of 132 parts (comparable chairs are made of up to 250 parts). Modular cushions for easy replacement. Ships in 85% recycled packaging, or blanket-wrapped when feasible. Greenguard Certified

Static Chairs Vs Swivel Chairs For Offices

There was a time when office chairs were static objects, and the word ergonomics probably never existed. Office chairs had no wheels, no swivel seat and no tilt mechanisms on them, literally all you could do is sit on them, in one position. If you were exceptionally important you may have been lucky enough to have a chair that had armrests on it. If your office chair didn't suit your body type then unfortunately you were going to experience an uncomfortable time when you were sat at work.

Adjustable Height Casters

Luckily though we're in the 'noughtties' and office chairs have come on a long way, and the word ergonomics exists. There are three main advantages that even the most basic swivel chair has over it static forbearer:

Adjustable Height Casters

Adjustability - In contrast to the static chair every swivel chair no matter how cheap has some degree of adjustability, whether it is automatically adjustable, or you have to get on your hands and knees to adjust the height, having that small amount of adjustability means that you will be able to set the chair up to suit your needs. Even on the most affordable of office chairs you will be able to adjust the back rest at least a couple of inches. This small amount of movement is all it takes to make sure that your lower back (lumbar as it is sometimes known) is properly supported. Ease of Movement - Any office chairs with casters on them are going to be infinitely easier to move about. This doesn't mean that you or your staff can become lazy and wheel themselves around the office. What it does mean is that when someone gets up from their desk there chair will not scrape across the floor. Having wheels on your office chairs will save you from the agonising sound of those chairs being dragged across the floor. Not only will it save your ears, it will also save you some cash in not having to replace worn areas of flooring. Efficiency - Having all of your staff seated on swivel chairs could actually improve the efficiency of your office. Being able to swivel round and pick up a folder is a lot more time efficient than having to get up from your desk and getting the folder. Obviously this point does tie in with the fact they you need an office that is designed around the tasks that it need to be done in it, but this in combination with a swivel chair as opposed to a static chair will make your office more efficient.

As I mentioned at the start of this article; a static chair was designed to suit the 'average' person and if you aren't Mr/Mrs average then those will be uncomfortable to sit on. Having an office that is correctly furnished is very important for staff moral and safety so don't skimp on the chairs.

Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD) - An Overview of Preventive Methods

MSD's can range from general aches and pains to more serious problems. Medical practitioners do recommend that all the users who use computers regularly should report signs and symptoms as early as possible to prevent serious injury or permanent damage. The most commonly noticed signs and symptoms of MSD associated with computer use are as follows:

Adjustable Height Casters

Signs and Symptoms

Adjustable Height Casters

1) Numbness or a burning sensation in the hand

2) Reduced grip strength in the hand

3) Swelling or stiffness in the joints

4) Pain in wrists, forearms, elbows, neck, or back followed by discomfort

5) Reduced range of motion in the shoulder, neck, or back

6) Dry, itchy, or sore eyes

7) Blurred or double vision

8) Aching or tingling

9) Cramping

10) Loss of color in affected regions

11) Weakness

12) Tension stress headaches and related ailments

These types of problem can be caused by any of the following factors:

1. If the user maintains an unnatural or unhealthy posture while using the computer

2. If the lower back support is inadequate for the user

3. If the user continues to sit in the same position for an extended period of time

4. If the workstation set up is ergonomically poor.

It should be noticed that all these symptoms might not necessarily lead to an MSD. However, if the user experiences any of the above symptoms, he/she should make an evaluation of their working positions as well as the layout of their workstation.

It is always better to take precautions to avoid musculoskeletal disorders than to treat them after you get affected. Some general precautions include:

· Taking regular breaks from working at your computer - a few minutes at least once an hour

· Alternating work tasks like mixing computer tasks with non computer tasks alternately to avoid strain

· Regular stretching to relax your body

· Using comfort equipment such as footrests, wrist/palm rests, and document holders if required

· Keeping the mouse and keyboard at the same level

· Avoiding gripping your mouse too tightly - it is always recommended to hold the mouse lightly and click gently

The monitor should possess the following features:

· Your monitor should swivel, tilt and elevate - if not use an adjustable stand, books, or blocks to adjust the height

· It should be positioned so the top line of the monitor is not higher than your eyes or not lower than 20° below the horizon of your eyes or field of vision

· Ensure that it is at the same level and near the document holder if you use one

· It should be between 18 to 24 inches away from your face

The keyboard should possess the following features:

· It should be detachable and adjustable (with legs to adjust angle)

· It should allow your forearms to be parallel to the floor without having to raise your elbows

· It should allow your wrists to be in line with your forearms so your wrists need not be flexed up or down

· It should include enough space to rest your wrists or should include a padded detachable wrist rest (or you can use a separate gel wrist rest which should be at least 50 mm deep)

· It should be placed directly in front of the monitor and at the same height as the mouse, track ball, touch pad, or any other pointing device.

The chair should possess the following features:

· It should support the back, and have a vertically adjustable independent back rest that returns to its original position and should have tilt adjustment to support the lower back

· It should allow the user to adjust its height to be adjusted from a sitting position

· It should be adjusted so the back crease of the knee is slightly higher than the pan of the chair (use a suitable footrest, if required)
· It should be supported by a five prong caster base

· Ensure that it has removable and adjustable armrests

· It should also have a contoured seat with breathable fabric and rounded edges to distribute the weight and should be adjustable to allow the seat pan to tilt forward or back

The table/desk should possess the following features:

· Ensure that your table/desk provides ample leg room and is height adjustable (preferably)

· It should have enough room to support the computer equipment and space for documents

· It should be at least 900 mm deep

· It should have rounded and blunt corners and edges

As discussed earlier, ensure that your workstation is set up correctly. Normally, it includes the monitor, keyboard, mouse, seating, desk, and where appropriate, footrest, wrist rest, and document holder.

Trundle Beds - The Remedy For Room Shortage

A trundle bed is a type of bed that is build on rollers to make it go underneath another bed or a furniture fragment. One is a conventional bed, but the frame resembles a huge drawer, which carries the other bed. The trundle bed is a bed-within-a-bed.

Adjustable Height Casters

Trundle beds get their name from the trundles, another name for casters that are used to move them back and forth. By the history annals, trundle beds were originally made for servants, so that they were able to sleep as close to their employers as possible to be able to answer their needs if required in the middle of the night.

Adjustable Height Casters

Trundle bed is also known as a captain's bed. The origin of the term no doubt comes from the scarcity of storage space in the tight confines of life on board ship.

This type of bed is one of the best among great bed options for a small room, and a convenient way to have a guest bed available when you need it, but may be stored away to fee up the space. They give place for sleeping for a couple of people without consuming the extra space of an ordinary bed. It is great for small rooms and frequent sleepovers. If you don't need an extra sleeping place, the smaller bed is put away under the main bed.

If there is a need to get an extra sleeping place, just take the trundle out. If it is not needed anymore, you can push it back under the bed thus giving yourself some more free floor space. When combined with a daybed, trundle beds are a great way to maximize space and comfort.

These beds are much liked in families with young children who live in one room. It is especially useful in kids' rooms, as it allows for bigger room for playing during the daytime, but can still easily provide two kids with their own beds at night. If there is nobody to sleep on the trundle, simply put it under the main bed without the need to take away the additional mattress or have to clean up the blankets in the living room.

Kids' trundle bed could be provided with colorful mattress covers that sport cartoon characters and other images that appeal to young children.

Trundle beds may also be used in the guest room, or in any small space where you may wish to have a spare bedding. If you need some extreme space saving feature - you can try to look for trundle bunk beds for sale.

Most trundles have the mattresses at different heights, but there are trundle beds created to unfold and popup to a height same with the height of the daybed mattress. so you have a sleeping surface same to that of a standard king size bed. Two trundle bed mattresses of a twin size put together are equal to one king size mattress. The mattresses not heavy at all and and can be easily carried to where they are required.

When not in use, the mattress from the lower bed can be taken away; thus you will have a nice open space to storage things.

The most available sort of trundle is a bed with low trundle which means someone has to sleep close to the floor. Some conventional bed frames are quite high to let the low profile trundle be stored under.

School Furniture - Empowering the Learning Environment

One of the most crucial tasks school administrators face is establishing a positive atmosphere for learning, and school furniture plays a major role in the way a school looks and feels to the students learning within its walls. Classrooms that are cheerful and bright encourage a far more positive learning experience than ones that are colorless and drab.

Adjustable Height Casters

On the other hand, school furniture that is too colorful and busy can actually present a distraction to students. Besides aesthetics, comfort, size, space, durability and - don't forget - budget, are all factors that need to be taken into account when planning furniture for schools. Whether you're designing a new school or upgrading an older one, the classroom furniture you choose will have a decisive impact on the way students feel about their studies.

Adjustable Height Casters

Have a Seat!
Studies show that students between the ages of 13-18 years old spend about 78% of their time sitting down. But the truth is that even preschoolers spend a considerable amount of time in their chairs. So a lot of thought needs to go in to choosing the best school chair for your classrooms.

Say What? A Little Terminology...
First, a little school furniture terminology to help make things clear.

School chair seats are manufactured out of one of three materials: wood, soft plastic and hard plastic. Wood means just that, wood. Soft plastic is the colloquial name for polyethylene and polypropylene. Polyethylene has a lot of give; polypropylene, while not actually bendable, does conform somewhat so that students can lean back a bit in their chairs. Hard plastic is far more rigid than its soft counterpart and has no bend whatsoever.

The legs and supports of school chairs are usually made of one of three gauges of steel: 18, 16, and 14 gauge. Contrary to what one might assume, the lower the gauge the stronger the steel, so if you're looking for the strongest supports around, you would look for chairs with 14 gauge steel.

Down to Size - How High Should School Chairs Really Be?
Ideally, children should be able to plant their feet firmly on the floor even when sitting with their backs against their chairs. This position minimizes fidgeting and provides proper back support. Practically speaking, there will always be some children whose feet dangle when they sit all the way back, or who will have to lean forward if they want their feet to reach the floor. When measuring school chairs, the height is always measured from the floor to the highest point on the seat surface.

Table Talk - A Word About School Tables
As with chairs, here's a bit of school desk and table terminology you should be familiar with.

The top of school tables or desks is the part that gets the most use, and is the easiest to damage. There are two basic types of table/desk tops for schools. The first - and least expensive - is called a laminate, which is essentially a wood top with a processed surface that protects it from minor damage. Everyday splotches like pencil marks, fingerprints and white-out will come off easily; however, the desk will be vulnerable to dents and pen scratches, as well as damage from sharp objects.

The second kind of tabletop is a hard plastic top. This is just what it sounds like - a desk or table covered with a solid piece of hard plastic. These are extremely difficult to damage, as they are quite tough and can stand up to major student abuse. Although they can be significantly more expensive in the short run, their durability can make them worth their while in the long run.

There is, however, a third type of desk top called Woodstone. Manufactured exclusively by Hertz Furniture, Woodstone is made of a hard plastic surface with a core of wood and/or wood parts. It is just about as durable as regular hard plastic, but since it is less expensive to manufacture, its price is more or less the same as a laminate.

Now that you've got all the terminology you need, you're ready to actually think about the school furniture that will serve your students best. Since different grades have different needs, we'll break it up by age group.

Kiddie Korner
Gross motor skills in small children are still very much in the development stage; that's why they tend to trip and fall more often than older children. So when your budding students go down with a bang, you want to make sure that their chairs stay intact.

Despite the need for durability, though, soft plastic is a far more popular choice for this age than hard plastic. Small children's bodies are not yet fully developed (that's why they're so soft and cuddly); as a result, they are uncomfortable sitting in very rigid chairs. So look for chairs made of top-quality soft plastic.

Some school chairs come with a plastic back and seat, but metal frames and legs for added strength and support. These are great for durability, but smaller children might stick their fingers into the space between the metal and plastic and get them pinched or even stuck. If that's a concern for you, look for soft plastic chairs made of one piece, solid construction, as these will have no spaces for curious little fingers. They are also much less expensive.

If you're looking for the strength of the metal-plastic combination but want the safety of a one-piece unit, you might want to try a school chair made of a mixture of soft and hard plastic. These chairs are made of a one-piece, soft plastic shell (meaning the back and seat) that is ultrasonically welded to a hard plastic base.

In most P-K classrooms, the same general areas are used for such varying activities as circle time, arts and crafts, eating and even sleeping. That makes it necessary to have chairs that can be moved and stored easily. So look for chairs that stack easily and in quantity. Make sure that they can be pushed or pulled without too much effort as well. This is especially important for 5-6 year olds, who will be expected to clear away the chairs when they're "on duty".

Tables
For preschoolers to kindergarten, you want to look for tables that measure from about 19-23 inches in height. Some tables come with adjustable legs, so you can raise and lower them to suit your needs.

Generally speaking, children up to kindergarten age sit between four and eight to a table. If you're looking at a rectangular table, calculate approximately 20 inches for each child. For round tables, figure that between eight and ten children can fit around a table with a 48 inch diameter.

Although small children are not necessarily harsh on their school furniture - even their scissors tend to have round edges - they can be pretty messy. Glue, crayons, markers, glitter and paint will all "decorate" your tables liberally. So, although you may not need tables with hard plastic tops, make sure you buy ones with a high quality laminate to make clean-up as hassle-free as possible.

The shape of your school tables will depend a great deal on the structure of your classroom. While many schools use standard round or rectangular tables, there are others that prefer kidney-shaped tables, which allow all the children to have an equal view of the teacher. If it is important to you to be able to push tables together, then consider trapezoidal tables. Some companies, like Hertz Furniture, carry specialty tables, like clove or flower-shaped.

The Next Stage - Elementary School Chairs
Starting with first grade, young students are expected to sit and concentrate for far longer periods of time. Therefore, ensuring maximum comfort and minimum fidgeting is a top priority.

Most standard elementary school chairs are made from soft plastic. These are both more comfortable and less expensive; however, they are not as durable as their hard counterparts. If you're operating under budget constraints - or it's important to you that students have school chairs they can lean back in - then here are a few features to that will give your soft plastic chairs an added boost of durability:

* Back supports - These are steel supports that run all the way up the back to offer extra back support. * Underseat brackets - These supporting brackets under the chair seat. * 16 gauge steel - Ideally, the steel supports should be made of at least 16 gauge steel. * Long-term warranty - Make sure that the manufacturer is willing to stand behind its products. Some brands, like Academia from Hertz Furniture, actually offer a limited lifetime warranty on their school chairs.

Wood chairs are extremely durable and give a beautiful, classic look to school room furniture. They are considerably more expensive than either soft or hard plastic, though, which is one of the main reasons you don't see them too often.

School Chairs - Leg Options
A standard, four legged school chair is the best choice for schools with hard floors. The chair rests on four legs that are usually made of tubular steel and capped with glides to keep the chairs level and prevent scratches on hard surface floors. Nylon or plastic glides are softer on hard floors, and prevent students from making distracting noises when they move around.

Sled-based chairs are also made of tubular steel; however, rather than splitting into four legs, the chair is supported on each side by a base that resembles a sled. This type of school chair doesn't move easily across hard floors, but it glides softly and easily on carpeted surfaces.

The third option is school chairs on casters. These are four-legged chairs with little wheels attached so that students can turn around with ease, and are highly recommended for classrooms like computer labs or art rooms. They can, however, be hazardous for students in younger grades, and are usually reserved for either teachers or for middle school and up.

Turning the Tables
Once children enter first grade, they no longer sit four, six or eight to a table; rather, they sit either in pairs or at individual desks. They use their tables more and more for writing and less and less for activities such as arts and crafts, and, as their studies become departmentalized, they have more materials to keep track of. The older the students get, the more frequently they write with pens (as opposed to pencils), and they need sharp-edged school supplies like sharp scissors and compasses.

So when planning elementary school furniture, you should be looking for tables that 1) accommodate two students comfortably; 2) provide a storage solution for school materials and supplies; and, 3) will stand up to intense daily wear and tear.

For younger grades, height adjustable activity tables are great. They have plenty of room for young students to have all their materials on the table without invading their tablemate's space. Although these work well for older grades, too, many schools prefer school desks at this stage. If you're interested in desks for grades 5 and up but still want your students to be able to work comfortably in pairs, then look for double desks such as those manufactured by Hertz Furniture.

As far as school supplies, consider chairs with attached book baskets, or desks with open view book boxes. It can be important for the teacher to see what the students have under their desks, both to facilitate neatness and order and to prevent undesirable objects (or pets!) from creating discipline problems. Definitely look for school tables with hard plastic tops, or at least a very high quality laminate. Best-quality desk and tabletops will save you both money and time-consuming maintenance.

If your school has wheelchair-bound students, make sure that at least some of your tables are wheelchair accessible. Some schools purchase only wheelchair accessible tables so that all students have the same school furniture, regardless of physical ability.

Growing and Growing and...Some Tips for 7th-12th Grade Chairs and Tables
Generally speaking, just about everything that applies to elementary school furniture applies to junior high and high school as well. There are, however, a few exceptions and additions.

The first is that, at this point, height is no longer an issue. All your students will need 18"-19" inch school chairs.

Secondly, 7th-12th graders can be tough on their school furniture. Besides regular wear and tear, they also have a tendency to write (and occasionally engrave) messages on their chairs. So hard plastic chairs are highly recommended. Ditto for desk tops. If budget constraints don't allow for that, make sure that the desks you purchase have a very high quality laminate or Woodstone top.

Thirdly, unlike the elementary grades, most schools provide individual desks from 7th grade and up. These come in a variety of shapes and sizes, depending largely on whether your school is geared for independent learning, cooperative learning or a combination of both. Double desks, mentioned earlier, make it easy for students to organize into partners. Trapezoidal desks allow students to sit individually, but can be conveniently joined together to form semi-circles, hexagons or octagons for group learning. Individual desks, which you see in most classrooms, promote independent learning. Some have an enlarged surface to fit large textbooks, laptops, and to provide additional working space for study partners.

Last, students in 7th-12th grades have a lot more school materials for each class, as well as school supplies. That means that it is crucial to have school furniture that provides a storage solution for all their stuff. Some schools prefer chairs with attached bookshelves or baskets for a convenient place to store things yet eliminates the tendency of students to fidget with them, as they are safely under the seats. Other schools prefer under-the-desk storage, which allows students easy access to whatever they may need.

If you have wheelchair-bound students, make sure to take them into consideration when purchasing school desks. There are a number of wheelchair-accessible desks available in a variety of styles, many of which are appropriate for the non-wheelchair bound as well.

An economical choice - both in terms of money and space - is a chair-desk combination unit. Used mostly in high schools, these come with a choice of both soft and hard plastic chairs, and desktops.

School furniture comes in a variety of colors. Navy blue and burgundy are currently the most popular, but you can find chairs in unique colors as well as in all the primary colors. For classrooms with a color scheme that is both classy and consistent, Educational Edge(TM) offers a line of completely color-coordinated furniture. And if you're looking for school furniture that is both unusually strong and uniquely designed, try the Inspiration line by Hertz Furniture.

The Finishing Touch - School Chair Frame Finishes

Now that you've selected the height, material, and type of leg you want your school chairs to have, it's time to decide on the frame finish. There are three types of frame finishes for school chairs:

1) Chrome - This is the popular, very shiny silver finish you see on many chairs. It is very easy to maintain.

2) Powder Coat - Powder coat is a paint finish that is electro-statically applied to steel components such as a frame, leaving a highly durable finish. It can be ordered in a number of colors, so if color-coordinating the frame and the seat is important to you, this is the finish you would choose.

3) Mirage - Mirage is also a powder coat, but it is colored to look like the classic chrome.

All are rust-resistant, unless of course you leave them out in the rain.
